Foolhardy Fun Ends in Tragedy

ANDRE J. JACKSON/Detroit Free Press

Young adults. We all have been stupid in our lives and taken risks but when we were growing up we were told if you pick on someone bigger than you expect to loose. Please, Please, Please, realize that you can and will die. I know what it is like to want to seek thrills, it gets the adrenalin and endorphins flowing. There are many more safer ways to accomplish this than have your car argue with a train.

Your car weighs about 3,000 to 3,500 pounds or 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 tons. A diesel on the other hand weighs about 270,000 pounds or about 135 tons. This is just the engine folks then there are the cars, passengers, and cargo all going at 67 mph. If I remember my math right KE = 1/2 * m * v(2) (2) = squared.

This means the force of just the engine = 67,335,000 pounds, you can not win that one folks, and this is just the engine.

Please be safe. Do not encourage this type of behavior. Please, please, please for the sake of those that you would leave behind DO NOT TRY TO BEAT A TRAIN!!! People out there love you and want you around. I bet these 5 kids thought this kind of stuff only happens to other kids. Look at their car! Then look at it again, and again until it sinks in. They became a part of the car, after it was found a mile down the tracks.

  1. Very sad. I would have just gone bungee jumping instead. :[

  2. the spirit of youth can be scary and also amazing. Please be safe whether it be drinking or going to parties, or trying to seek some thrill….dont end your life by doing something to stupid. there are ways to have fun without much risk…try a roller coaster, or skydiving, and just looking around you and see what you have. see what you have to lose. be safe, joe
