UPDATE: Air France Flight 447 Down

Is the South Atlantic Anomaly to blame? I believe that it is a real possibility. Our jets today are high tech and the more high tech the more easily it can be affected by radiation. What is the the South Atlantic Anomaly, you say? It is a region in the South Atlantic where our magnetosphere is fading rapidly. The magnetosphere is the magnetic flow around the planet that protects us from head on solar radiation. We all know what radiation can do to electronic equipment, a nuclear device sends out an EMP, Electronic Magnetic Pulse and it can cause all electronic equipment to fail.

The SAA is not only growing but coming closer to earth. It is 3,000,000 miles square. There is great concern among the scientific community about how rapidly our magnetic field is disappearing. This could be one answer as to why Flight 447 went down. This is some real scary stuff that has dire implications to our life on earth. It will kill us eventually, there is no doubt about it. The first place that we will feel its effects are in the air. So this theory is sound but of course not a definite reason for flight 447 went down.

According to NASA astronauts have seen flashes in the cockpits even when their eyes were closed. These were most likely high powered radioactive particles of solar radiation in the Van Allen Belt. NASA also states that 36 astronauts have suffered cataracts within 5 years after these experiences. Coincidence? I do not think so . . .

In the last 20 million years our magnetic shift North becomes South and South becomes North has happened 18,000 times. The last time this happened was 780,000 years ago and with these shifts weakend magnetic fields have occured. We are over due for one of these shifts.

What are your thoughts?

  1. I can assure you that there is no “great concern” about the fading magnetic field of Earth in the scientific community.

  2. If you can convince National Geographic of that, I will be convinced.

  3. LOL. APS and IAU trump National Geographic. Since the weakening of the earth’s magnetic field is a cyclical phenomenon, and one that takes place over centuries (I am not sure where you got your 18000 reversals from; the real number is about 50 in the last 20 mln years, off the top of my head). what’s more, the weakening is currently affecting the dipole component only. What’s more, it is certainly not going to kill us, having happened repeatedly in the past without any observable effects on Earth’s biosphere. There are plenty of other things to worry about.

  4. LOL, it is fun to play with things like this especially since the Mayan calendar ends in 2012 and our next set of solar maximums is due to hit in 2012 and for the 11 years that follow. NG gave the 18,000 figure. The eventually kill us reference was not explained clearly on my part but what I meant is if we are still around eventually the earths core will cool and slow and there will hardly be a magnetosphere left like Mars and out atmosphere will disappear, the water will be gone and we (the earth) will be subject to full head on intense solar radiation.

There is no doubt that melodramatics sell and NG is no doubt not an exception, that is why I have a category of “media hype” but it is fun to play with the possibilities. NOW STOP RUINING MY FUN TOYING WITH OTHERS!!!!!

    LOL LOL

    BTW welcome to the site.

Jorg, check this out THE TECH HERALD

  5. Heh-heh, indeed. I traced your figure of 18000 and the most likely match is the number of reversals since the beginning of the magnetic field itself, you know, several billion years ago. I wouldn’t be too concerned about the Mayan calendar either: the ending of the cycle has as much significance as December 31st in our calendar, and the coincidence with the solar activity is, when you think of it, no big deal: the cycle is 11 years, so it would have to be a 1 in 11 chance, and when you end up the inherent uncertainty of the cycle it becomes more like 1:3 or 1:2.5–no big deal at all. It’s my pet peeve since I have people bugging me about it all the time…

But sure, mess with their minds all you want.

  6. Jorg,

OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!! The world is going to end December 31 because our calender ends then!!!!!!!! Thanks for the heads up!!!!!
