Girl barred from boys’ basketball team

I say good! I am not sexist I just want equality. There are several issues here. Many are now saying that the boys egos are in the way because she is better than them. I say this is nonsense. I do not care that she is better than many boys and I think it is great that she excels at something that she enjoys. She however is cheating more than one team and person. Who you may ask. I am here to answer that. First and foremost she is cheating her girls team by not being there for them [no brainer in my eyes]. Second, if the boys team makes cuts she is cheating a boy from his right to play. Logical questions. If he is cut can he now even try out for the girls team? Are any boys allowed to try out girls teams? NO. This has never happend to the best of my knowledge, if anyone knows of this situation I would like to hear it with citing. Third, there is an inherent problem with boy/men and girls/women playing in the same league in today’s political/sue happy climate. Any sport has the potential for contact and this creates a danger for those that are male. What kind of touching or contact incidental to the game is going to be considered “unwelcome sexual touching?” Sorry, but it is my belief that this puts men/boys at a serious disadvantage with this constantly in the back of their mind, continually assaulting them while attempting to play the best that they can and attempting to win the game. I know I would be weary, very weary. Enough of this craziness there are boys teams and there are girls teams let us not fix something that is not broken.

BEAVERTON, Ore. – A growing controversy at The Hoop in Beaverton is raising questions of gender equity.

The Hoop is a basketball mecca that runs multiple leagues. One of their best players is a 6’, 12-year-old girl.

Jamie Nared has competed against boys for more than a year, but now she’s being told “no girls allowed.” Her parents and her coach are asking, if she’s good enough to play, why can’t she?

The management at The Hoop says Nared was never “allowed” to play against the boys, but her coach put her in the game without knowledge of The Hoop management. The boys’ teams complained because the members had signed up to part of a boy’s league, not a co-ed league.

The Hoop general manager David Vizzini said, “We want Jamie Nared to have all the success in the world.” He added that the facility would like to host co-ed play, if teams expressed an interest.

“The Hoop has attempted to run co-ed leagues and tournaments in the past, but there has never been enough interest and/or teams enough to satisfy such a program. If there are enough teams interested in pursuing co-ed leagues and tournaments we would be committed to developing such a program. Our product is “sport” and we are committed to providing the best opportunities to the athletes in our community… or anyone who visits our facility.”
